Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited

At this point, Brilliance is using Derways facilities.

Brilliance Auto’s long-term strategy for Russia envisages the construction of an assembly plant, a source within the Chinese carmaker confirmed. Meanwhile, the strategy covering the period until 2023 does not provide for an exact timeline for the plant’s construction, or its capacity or model range, the source specified. According to the source, “the issue of the plant’s construction will be considered subject to continued positive sales dynamics and provided car sales reach a level of a few tens of thousands Brilliance autos.”

Brilliance automobiles are already produced in Russia under a contract manufacturing scheme at a Derways automotive plant in Cherkessk.

“Derways is our strategic partner, and we are happy with its performance and plan to continue our cooperation,” the Brilliance representative added.

Incidentally, Brilliance is not the only Chinese carmaker seeking to set up its own production operations in Russia. As such, Lifan is considering building a plant in the Lipetsk region with a design capacity of 60,000 cars a year (at the first stage) worth $300m, while Great Wall is weighing a plant in the Tula region with a potential capacity of 150,000 automobiles a year, with investments running up to $500m. Both companies plan to start production in 2017. Changing its plans from last year to build a plant worth $1.1bn with a capacity of 100,000 cars a year, Hawtai Motor has teamed up instead with Kamaz in a joint venture announced this September. The partners are still in talks to determine the parameters of the project, a Kamaz representative confirmed.
