According to Matsunaga, manufacturing equipment will be installed after the buildings are constructed. The entire process is scheduled for completion by the end of 2015. Toyota Motor Corp. announced Wednesday its group's global auto sales in the first half of 2014 increased 3.8 percent on year to a record 5.09 million units.

The group's global sales, which include models from Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., topped its previous record set in the same period of 2012 at 4.98 million units and has surpassed the 5 million mark for the first time.

The figure comes ahead of Germany's Volkswagen AG at 4.97 million units and the U.S.' General Motors Co. at 4.92 million, securing Toyota's spot as the world's best-selling automaker in the period for a third straight year.

Toyota said that brisk sales of its SUV's, including its Highlander and Lexus GX SUV models, in North America in the first half of the year buoyed its global sales.

The automaker said that deliveries in North America of its mid- sized Highlander SUV were up 17 percent, those of its compact crossover RAV4 SUV rose 15 percent and its remodeled luxury Lexus GX SUV surged more than 50 percent in the Jan-June period.

Toyota's global output in the first half of 2014 also increased 3.8 percent from the same period a year earlier to 2.99 million units, owing to strengthening demand from its North American, European and Asian markets.

Toyota's vehicle sales in the first half grew 12 percent in China, while sales in North America increased 5 percent and expanded 8 percent in Europe.

Domestic output also saw an uptick in the period, the automaker said, up 0.5 percent from a year earlier to total 2.19 million units.

Sales in Japan seemed to weather the sales tax hike storm, with purchases made before the April 1 tax increase from 5 to 8 percent, enough to counterbalance slumping demand thereafter. Toyota said its domestic group sales totaled 1.25 million units, rising 6.5 percent in the period from a year earlier.

For the month of June and excluding its Daihatsu and Hino vehicles, sales dropped 1.5 percent on year to 126,675 units, following declines of 10.1 percent and 18.2 percent in May and April, respectively, following the tax hike.

But Toyota has forecast deliveries of 10 million vehicles for the year, ahead of last year's total of 9.98 million vehicles last year, which beat deliveries by Volkswagen at 9.73 million and GM at 9.71 million.
