The first phase of construction of a factory that will manufacture braking systems for high-speed trains, including Sapsan trains, has begun in St Petersburg. The announcement was made by the head of the city’s Committee for Industrial Policy and Innovations Maksim Meiksim.

The factory has been built by Federal Freight (a Russian Railways subsidiary) and German Knorr-Bremse. The partners have created the Knorr-Bremse 1520 joint enterprise for the purpose (with 40% belonging to Federal Freight and 60% belonging to the German company). A total of 1.8 billion roubles (around 29.5 million euros) has been invested in the project. It is expected that 80% of the parts will be manufactured locally.

Future plans include launching production of compressors, door modules and braking equipment for trams and trucks. In addition to this, Knorr-Bremse is planning on moving its production facilities from Tver and Voronezh to St Petersburg in 2016.
