Yum! Brands, Inc

Yum! Brands, the operator of the KFC fast food chain, is planning to expand it to 550 restaurants in Russia and CIS by 2017, the company said in a press release marking the opening of its 400th restaurant in Russia and CIS.

“The pace of KFC’s expansion in Russia and CIS and the existing market conditions allow us to be optimistic about our plans for the future that we have announced before – to be opening at least 75 restaurants annually on average”, Yum! Brands Russia CEO Oleg Pisklov said.

Yum! Brands, Inc., based in Louisville, Kentucky, is one of the world’s largest restaurant companies with over 41,000 restaurants in more than 125 countries and territories. Its restaurant brands include KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

Yum! Brands entered a strategic alliance with the Rostik Group in Russia in 2005 to develop the Rostik’s-KFC chain. In 2006 Rostik’s-KFC became a separate business unit within the Russian group. In 2010 Yum! Brands bought the Russian fast food chain Rostik’s-KFC, before starting to rebrand its restaurants as KFC in 2011.

The chain’s sales in Russia rose 48% in the first quarter of 2015 (before currency translation gains and losses). The company hasn’t disclosed Russian market sales in dollar terms.

Russia accounted for 4% of the chain’s total sales in 2014 outside China and India.

Yum! Brands Inc. reported sales down 4% in the first quarter to $2.622 billion (including franchisee restaurant sales). Operating profit declined 11% to $506 million and net profit decreased 9% to $362 million. Diluted EPS fell to $0.81 from $0.87 in the first quarter of 2014.

KFC plans to have at least 550 restaurants in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States by 2017, the country head of owner Yum! Brands Inc. said Wednesday at a ceremony to mark the opening of its 400th outlet in the region.

KFC’s Russian expansion mirrors that of rival fast-food chains. Burger King, part of Restaurant Brands International Inc., added 104 Russian restaurants last year, boosting its network by more than 60 percent. McDonald’s Corp. plans to open 50 outlets in the country this year, after adding 73 last year and surpassing 500 restaurants in total last month. It will also spend more on modernizing existing locations.

Pisklov confirmed Yum! Brands’ plan to open 300 Pizza Hut outlets in Russia. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company also plans to bring the Taco Bell brand to Russia some time in future, but has no immediate plans, he said.
